The FBI raided the former president’s Mar-a-Lago resort home on Monday, Aug. 8. This is the first time that something like this has ever happened. It is currently unknown what, if anything, they confiscated..
On Aug. 8, the FBI raided Trump’s home in Palm Beach, Florida. They had reason to believe that when Trump left the White House, he took several boxes full of government papers, both classified and unclassified. The FBI had raided the home and looked through the safe, according to Trump.
This is the first tie that the FBI had ever raided a former president’s house. In order for them to do a raid, two things needed to happen. They must get approval from the attorney general and provide hard proof to a federal judge that there is probable cause to believe a crime was committed.
Trump was not at that home at the time of the raid. Instead, he was at Trump Tower in New York. He learned of the raid through his son, Eric Trump.
“After working and cooperating with the relevant Government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was not necessary or appropriate.”
The raid was so secret that not even top Biden White House officials were given advance notice of the raid. The reason for this is because of the upcoming rematch between Trump and Biden in 2024. As a result, Trump is trying to compare the raid to Watergate.
Mar-a-Lago and Watergate
This is nothing at all like Watergate. Watergate was done by people in the Nixon administration, in which none of them were trained in raiding. It was not an official team, but just random people that Nixon had contacted. The FBI also has checks and balances to make sure that they are only raiding when necessary and taking only what belongs to the White House. This was not done to get a leg up on Trump, but only to get the documents that he stole back.
It is currently unknown what, if anything, the FBI had secured.
